childcancerOne of the international programs NAO is involved with is the Childhood Cancer Campaign (CCC).  This supports children diagnosed and receiving treatment for cancer; families and care partners of children with cancer; healthcare and service providers; and cancer research.

Spread the word about childhood cancer.  June is Optimist International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Make a commitment in June to help spread the word about childhood cancer and its devastating effects on families.

"Signing Santa" - For the past 3 years NAO has been putting on an event in the Austin area called "Signing Santa."  This event is held in December close to Christmas and we actually hire a hearing-impaired "Santa" to sign to the kids that are also hearing-impaired.  We distribute flyers to the School for the Deaf advertising our event.  We provide each child with a courtesy Polaroid picture with Santa and we give each child a small gift. It is very rewarding to see the faces of these little kids that are so excited to be able to "talk" to Santa in their own language.

Another program NAO supports is Youth Appreciation Week (YAW).  During this week we recognize local youth for their efforts in the arts, athletics, academics and community service work.  It's another way we make a difference in our community and demonstrate our commitment to young people.  youthapprweek

YAW projects are intended to make children feel important and highlight their positive contributions to society.  It is designed to encourage a greater exchange of ideas between young people and adults. It offers NAO the opportunity to make a community impact by holding one or more worthwhile, fun events that involve both adults and children.
